Celebrating Ivy Alexander

Nairobi’s Legendary Guitarist

Last weekend, I had the privilege of witnessing and documenting a remarkable musical talent—Nairobi-based guitarist Ivy Alexander—as she graced the Twakutukuza Worship Experience. Watching Ivy’s mastery of the guitar, with each note resonating through the audience, was nothing short of magical. Her skillful performance captivated everyone present, filling the atmosphere with depth and soul.

Ivy Alexander is not just a talented musician; she is a trailblazer in Kenya’s music scene. As a member of The Flower Project, Kenya’s pioneering all-female contemporary band, Ivy has shattered glass ceilings and inspired countless aspiring musicians. Founded by the renowned 2013 OneBeat Fellow Kasiva Mutua, The Flower Project is celebrated for its exceptional sound and dynamic performances. They currently serve as the house band for Coke Studio Africa, showcasing the power of African talent on a global stage.

Ivy’s influence extends beyond her performances in Nairobi. In 2018, she was handpicked by the British Arts Council to collaborate with UK-based jazz musicians at the prestigious Safaricom International Jazz Festival. This experience not only enriched her artistry but also opened new avenues for cross-cultural musical exchange. More recently, she spent a transformative summer performing in Frankfurt, Germany, where she immersed herself in Europe’s vibrant jazz scene. Reflecting on her time there, Ivy described it as both inspiring and unforgettable—a testament to her passion and dedication to her craft.

As I captured Ivy playing at Twakutukuza, it was clear that her music comes from a place of genuine love and dedication. She brings joy to the stage, each performance a reflection of her journey and the experiences that have shaped her. Watching her artistry firsthand was a reminder of the impact of music and the incredible talent we are privileged to witness.

Here’s to Ivy Alexander—a true legend and a beacon of inspiration in the world of music.
