8K Drone Cinematography and Ground-Level Storytelling with Lee Pitts Photography
Kibera does not allow you to work on autopilot. It requires discipline, cultural awareness, and technical control. On this assignment in Kibera, I was tasked with capturing drone footage and conducting interviews that reflected both the scale and the human reality of the environment. The objective was not spectacle. It was perspective.
I had the privilege of collaborating with Carl, a seasoned directing and producing force based in Nashville, Tennessee. For over fifteen years, Carl has operated at a high level within professional film production, directing major artists including Lauren Daigle, Gavin DeGraw, Switchfoot, Mandy Moore, and Rascal Flatts. That level of experience translates into clarity on set. There is no wasted movement. Every frame has intention. Every setup serves the story.
From a technical standpoint, this project pushed boundaries. We deployed the Antigravity A1, an 8K 360 degree drone designed for immersive aerial capture. Equipped with dual 1 over 1.28 inch lenses, it delivers a complete 360 degree field of view streamed directly to a headset. The 8K resolution produces exceptional detail, which is critical when documenting densely built environments like Kibera. With approximately 39 minutes of flight time and simplified point to fly controls, it allowed us to move efficiently while maintaining precision. At 249 grams, it remains lightweight without compromising capability.
On the ground, we paired this with the RED RAVEN, a compact 4.5K digital cinema camera built around the RED DRAGON sensor. With over 16 stops of dynamic range and the flexibility of REDCODE RAW, it handled high contrast lighting with control and depth. In a location where harsh sun and tight interiors coexist, dynamic range is not a luxury. It is essential.
As a pro photographer, stepping into a hybrid production environment sharpens instinct. Working alongside a high caliber director reinforces the value of collaboration. You learn to anticipate movement, adapt quickly, and think beyond still frames. I value that growth. It strengthens both my commercial and documentary work here in Nairobi and beyond.
Nashville is on the horizon. Creative partnerships built on trust and reliability lead to long term opportunities. Quality remains the standard.
